Best Starting Poker Hands

Knowing how to identify hand strength is crucial to succeeding in Poker! For that reason we are telling you which are the best starting poker hands. See which hands are the best to invest and destroy your opponents at the tables.

We’ve covered this here in several other articles about the sport: one of the big secrets to doing well in poker is playing fewer hands than you’d like – the recommended thing is to get into the action about 20% of the time. Now, identifying which hands are worth investing in each table position is practically an art. Mastering this type of ‘feeling’ requires a lot of dedication and training, however, we have listed 15 very good starting hands that should help you make a good profit right away. Check out!

The Texas Hold’em mode specifically features 169 different hand possibilities each round (ignoring suit combinations, of course). Of all of them, only five are considered ‘premium’, that is, excellent hands that should be played regardless of position:

  1. AA
  2. KK
  3. QQ
  4. AK (suited)
  5. JJ

In the end, it all depends on placement and how the game develops – it’s not because you’re holding one of these five hands that you’re unbeatable. Sometimes it is necessary to identify when the game situation is not favourable and get away with one of them… it is part of it.

When you decide to take action, the way you play completely changes the context – there are thousands of variables that are involved at a poker table every round. Regardless of what may happen, the foundation is one: as we said above, only about 20% of hands should be ‘playable’.

Another thing we always hit the screen around here: position. The strength of your hand changes drastically depending on where you’re sitting: an average hand like pocket eights, for example, can be very strong if you’re in late position at the table – depending on how your opponents acted before you. The big ‘cat leap’ is knowing how to identify if your starting hand is in the 20% by analysing the strength of the hand and the position it is in.
